- salsa romántica
- timbales
Why it matters
Luis Enrique was born in Nicaragua and is known as “El Príncipe de la Salsa”. Yo No Sé Mañana is the first single from his album Ciclos (Top Stop Music, 2009), produced by Bob Benozzo and Sergio George. Jorge Luis Piloto and Jorge Villamizar wrote it.
It won the Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Song in 2009, and Ciclos won the Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album, and a Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Album the next year. It reached number one on Billboard's Tropical Airplay chart. It shows salsa romántica alive in the 2000s, and that a Central American singer could lead it.
What to listen for
- The horn section (trumpets, trombone and sax) with its clean, bright hits, played in a polished, modern studio sound.
- The smooth, romantic vocal over a steady timbales and conga groove. It's easy to dance, with no tricky breaks.
- The coro and the sung phrases, which carry the song more than long solos do.
